How do you do the @ on the asus x541s please ?

Open Notepad / Wordpad, and see what keyboard layout you have. It might turn you have non-USA keybpard, where '@' sign is elsewhere.

In a hurry - you can always use Alt-064 (where 0, 6, 4 are dialed on the numeric keypad).
