hi..
i have approx 100 PC'c to run. i have server 2003. i want run defrag in all 100 PC when they shutdown.
but this has to run only once a week.
also i have another option.

defrag run when click shutdown and it analyse the c drive and decide whether to defrag or not. if it want to defrag it will do it.

everything must be written in a log which i can inspect later.

is this possible... please help..

i was hoping to do this for diskcleanup & checkdisc also...

You don't want to run defrag when they shutdown because if people shut off the PC and it hangs while trying to run the defrag, they will tend to force it to shut down. Just run the defrag overnight when the systems are not in use. You can easily schedule this though the scheduler. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555098 This same method should work with Windows 7, it may be a bit different but should be pretty similar steps.

For a domain it's even simpler to do using this group policy http://oneboise.com/kb/?p=59

except few pc's all others are shutdown by users as per our policies.. so doing it over night might not be possible..

Then you need to see what will happen in your environment if someone shuts down the system but it does not actually shut down for them. If you want to run a defrag, you can set a task to run at log off, although I don't know if a "shutdown" command will also be seen as a log off command. If people just hit "Shutdown" and walk away, it will run. If someone says "why isn't it shutting down when I told it to" and manually kills the power, it won't work very well.

Unless the systems see very heavy use with lots of file movement, you don't need to do a defrag more than a few times a year anyway.
