Ok so I have this older tv from probably the early 2000s. The hdmi is an older style one that isn't the same on both sides. Instead the one that goes into the back is larger and has the little knobs that you screw into the television. Long story short the picture works fine when I try to stream my laptop or play station but it doesn't have sound. How do I get it to work?

As kanewolf says the DVI connection doesn't handle audio so you have to add an audio connection. Your laptop headphone out can be connected to the audio input associated with the DVI input on your TV.
If the playstation has a separate audio output you can use that.
If it doesn't you can use an switch like this one to extract audio from the HDMI of both sources and connect them to your TV conveniently.
