A DVD player will not get audio from the TV.
You can get audio from your external sources to an audio system with an HDMI input selector with audio extraction. The built in TV tuner and smart apps won't play through that system.

Thanks for that mate. So if I go to an electronics shop and ask for a HDMI selector with audio extraction I could buy one? Any chance of explaining a little further? I have sort of solved the problem by using the earphone out jack on the tv to the red and white inputs on the receiver, but the volume and quality just is not there. I think when I had it set up at my other house I sent the tv through a DVD Recorder and then to the receiver. Would this work and give me the the volume and quality again? I do not want to go to the expense of a DVD recorder if it is not going to work. Thanks
