How do I connect my laptop to my TV using a VGA cable and converter to HDMI?

I have an older acer laptop. I bought a VGA cable and a VGA to HDMI converter but my TV still says no signal. What am I doing wrong?

Lots of times you have to hit a key combination to enable the vga port. The laptop's manual should have such info.

You should also set the TV as a 2nd or extended display. This way you can change the resolution of the VGA output to match the native resolution of the TV. You may need to update the video driver on the laptop to get it output the correct resolution.
The order that your boot the laptop and select the HDMI input that it's connected to can affect whether the TV will "handshake" with it and display the picture.
