how do i fix a play back divice

im not sure on how i repair a play back device as im new to stuff like this with my laptop and im not sure what i would need to do its a compaq presario cq60 and ive been trying to fix the audio and now its telling me when i try to call someone that there is a playback device im not sure even what that is

Playback = speakers, headphones; basically anything that produces sound.

Recording device = microphones or anything that receives audio.

What exactly is the error? Could you elaborate?
