I really want to take this opportunity to learn more about computers in general and I want to fix it myself.
My Retina Macbook Pro suddenly died with a faint burning smell. It was plugged in and fully charged, and even now the charge chord will light up green when I plug it in. Power button unresponsive, including special start up key inputs.
Update: sorry for the delay, I lost my special screwdriver and need to order a new one!
Without opening the case it would be difficult to know what has been affected unless it is noticeable from outside the case. Have you opened the case to find the source of the burning smell or to see what is burned?
