Question How do you enable surround sound on a laptop?

Sorry for the long explanation that's coming, but I would like to know about this. I have a 900 series Bose sound bar connected to the tv with an HDMI cable. I also have my laptop connected to the tv as well. I just found out recently that my computer is playing sound as a 2 channel stereo sound. I looked all over to see if i can change the settings on the laptop so it would play surround sound. Either my laptop isn't able to play the surround sound or i am doing something wrong, I'm afraid to change any advanced settings on my laptop because I don't want to lose any sound. How do I get the to play surround sound or is the sound bar interfering with it?
