How Do You Feel About This Laptop?

I am looking at buying this laptop for college, and this one seems like an excellent all around machine for my usage with a mid range GPU, great battery life, etc.

The only problem is that it is an Acer, a brand in which I have never heard great things.

What are your opinions on the Aspire line, as well as Acer in general?

I was looking at the HP Envy too, since it is around the same price, but the Envy has worse specs.

Acer has been around for ages, Chinese corporation. Their reputation has been kind of "low end but OK for the price" but it seems to be going up and some of their ultrabooks are highly regarded. They are a huge company. I don't know much beyond that. I wouldn't worry, they are probably fine.

I'd go for an Acer before I'd ever get near an HP Envy. HP has the highest failure rate of all manufacturers than their "support" puts you into a cycle of refurbished failures until your warranty runs out. Definitely not a good way to go.

Given your budget, that Acer is a solid way to go. It'll do everything you're trying to do, the build quality on the V7's is pretty solid, and the battery life will last you all day if you keep the brightness down and disable wifi when not in use.

I have been using Rescuecom for failure rate data, and it seems that HP fairs better than Acer, with Acer consistently being the worst. What is your opinion on that?
Also, any other computer suggestions?

Looks good, but too big and clunky for me. I also don't need it's higher end gpu.

There was a study done by consumer reports a couple years ago, I believe you can find the info on that here, and it breaks down failure rate and support success.

The only other suggestions, I have is the Lenovo Y50, which is a pretty good deal but will get much less battery life (around 4hrs) than the Acer V7.

Yea I had looked into the Y50, but it isn't what I want in a laptop right now.
