How does gateway bypass bios startup selection

Hello,
I have a gateway laptop with my original install disk. I want to do a WinXP non destructive reinstall. Gateway overides my bios boot process and will not intal from my dvd but tries to force me into a totally reinstall. How do I bypass Gateways "cheat"?

One of the F keys should give you a boot menu. Not sure what it is for Gateway. I would guess somewhere between F9 and F12.
