I am looking at two 2in1's one with 4GB and the other with 8GB...the GPU is integrated...the 4GB one is new and the 8GB one is refurbished...I am going to install Linux on them....I am worried the iGPU will eat up my RAM hence why i am looking at the 8GB refurbished one...

Which one should I go for ? the 4GB or the 8GB ? if you were in my shoes ?

Solution
Depends what the model is and price. Buying decisions are not decided by ram amount alone. Also what it's going to be used for also needs to be considered. 4gb is fine for general use and more could possibly be added.

There is no straight forward answer to how much ram an igpu uses. You can have different preallocated amounts and with intel, dvmt dynamically allocates based on need. But you will run into ram problems before vram taking ram is an issue as the amounts are limited.

the sad thing is in both cases the RAM sticks are soldered to the board...the CPU is the same in both models...I guess I will order the refurbed one...if I don't like it i can always send it back...

Many thanks...
