how to connect a non HDMI av receiver to a HD cable box to a HD tv

An old Pioneer receiver, a Dish HD box, a Samsung HD tv.

If you can, Dish Box -> HDMI -> TV -> toslink optical -> receiver.

Without knowing the connections available on each device there is no way to know if that is a valid configuration.

If the Pioneer receiver doesn't have optical inputs then you can use the RCA audio outputs on the DISH box or TV (if one of them has analog outputs.)
If neither does then you can add a DAC like this one to convert the optical out of the TV to analog.

Thanx--don't have toslink, but will use analog jacks.

HDMI receivers aren't expensive. If listed devices supports HDMI, go with that for much better A/V quality.
