Hello tomsguide,

I need your help in connecting my audio equipment.

I've recently been gifted a 5.1 home theater system :
http://www.lg.com/africa_en/home-theatre-systems/lg-BH6540T

The bluray that it came with doesn't have many connections; actually it only has two : an HDMI OUT and an Optical IN. I've connected my TV : (http://www.samsung.com/levant/support/model/UA40B7000WRXZN )
to the bluray player using an HDMI cable. So far so good right ?

The problem is that I'd also like my PS4 and my computer to have access to the surround system.
Both my PS4 and my computer have an HDMI port and an Optical OUT port.
My PC (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CXIVEA2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 ) is connected to my TV via an HDMI cord. Same thing for the PS4.

I figured I could buy an optical cable and connect my PS4 to the bluray, and when I'm not using my PS4, I'll just remove the cable and connect the bluray to my computer instead in order to have access to the surround system on it.

This will involve a lot of removing and plugging cables over and over again, which might not be good (for my sanity and the cables themselves).

I'd like a way for all my systems to have access to the home theater speakers without buying another receiver, if it's possible (money is pretty tight right now). I've thought about hdmi switchers but I don't think it will work in my situation, or at least, I don't see how (I have no experience with audio/video equipment).

I'd be really grateful if you could help me find a way to transmit video from my PS4 and PC to my TV and transmit their audio to the surround speakers.

you were gifted a HTIB [home theater in a box] and unfortunately many of those sets have very limited inputs which can make them hard to connnect up to external sources. some work and connect for 5.1 just fine while others accept 2.0 input only.

the biggest things to know are if your tv and new htib support hdmiARC [which allows sending audio backwards through inputs on supported devices]. if both tv and new htib do then you could just connect up to the tv via hdmi and change settings and sound would go back through to the sound system via arc.

otherwise, for pc or ps4 input you would need to use optical. for multiple inputs, you would want an optical switch. they should be fairly cheap. i cant guarantee 5.1 on your system [some htibs only support 2.0/2.1] so you will need to check and see what you get.

You both helped me a great deal guys, thank you.

My TV definitely supports HDMI ARC, but I'm not sure about the HTIB; I'll check it out when I come home from work.

The optical switch sounds like a neat idea. I've looked at both links and they might do the trick.
