The Razer Core is a self-contained external GPU that works with desktops and laptops. It provides powerful graphics capabilities to systems with onboard graphics or systems that cannot be upgraded. While the GPU in the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is pretty good, if you’re a gamer, nothing but the fastest will do. That’s where the Razer Core comes in. Here’s how to connect the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 to the Razer Core.
The Razer Core connects using USB-C via Thunderbolt 3. If you have read my other tutorial on USB with the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, there are a few teething issues with USB-C on the Dell XPS that need a little tweaking to work around. This newest laptop may not have the same issue, but I include it in this guide just in case.
To get the Razer Core working with the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, we first need to address the potential USB-C issue.
1. Right click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
2. Select Network Adapters and then Wi-Fi adapter.
3. Select Properties and Advanced.
4. Select ‘Power Output’ in the left pane and set it to 75%.
5. Click OK and close the window.
6. Reboot your device.
There is apparently a voltage shortage when Wi-Fi is turned up to 100% power, lowering it to 75% apparently addresses that.
Connect the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 to the Razer Core
As mentioned above, the newest XPS may not have the same voltage sharing problems of its predecessor but we have covered it off just in case. Now let us connect the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 to the Razer Core.
When first connecting, you should follow these steps to get everything set up.
1. Update the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 BIOS to the latest version that includes the latest Thunderbolt 3 update.
2. Install the latest Thunderbolt 3 software.
3. Install Razer Synapse.
4. Connect the Razer Core using the Thunderbolt 3 port.
5. Allow Razer Core to update if necessary.
6. Install the Nvidia GeForce Experience if not prompted to do so.
Once done, the Razer Core should now appear and be recognized. The Nvidia tray should appear in the hidden icons box and you should be able to use it as required. Then, the next time you use your Razer Core, Windows should recognize it right away without having to update anything.
