How to fix Compaq screen?

Hello,
The screen on my mom's Compaq Presario 9700 laptop is so loose you
need to put something behind it to hold it in place. Any ideas on a fix?

Tell me about it! I have an 1800T with the same problem.... I use a heavy
crystal vase to prop my screen up. Not my preferred solution. I plan to take
my screen off and to examine the hinges to see if there's any way to tighten
them. I think they used little teeth as detents, and when they get rounded
off.... floppy screen.

We also have an 1800T with loose hinges..it also looses connection requiring
it to be jiggled back and forth on the hinges to get an image. I'll be
watching for a follow up post to see if you have any success . We've
replaced it with an HP ZD7000 but I'd like to keep using the 1800T as a
backup anyway.

I had this same problem on my DIL's 722US. After numerous fruitless
entreaties to Compaq to cover this matter under warranty, I found a set of
hinges on eBay and fixed them myself.

This is such a common problem with Compaqs that they have been forced to
cover these repairs under warranty in the EU, but no such luck in the US or
CA.

Where did you get the special screwdriver required to install the new
hinges? Also, do you know what Compaq wanted to charge to fix it?

There's no "special" screwdriver required beyond a set of Torx drivers. You
can get a set at your local Rat Shack.

No, I never asked them what the repair cost was once I had determined that
they wanted $330 for the hinges alone!

Go to E-Bay, they have all types of hinges for laptop. I got mine
(compaq presario 12xl310) at a good price. Robert :lol:

Does anyone know how to access the hinges to replace them on a Compaq
Presario 722US? I am having the same problem as others with the
screen falling back/forward. I can get the hinges fairly cheap, but I
don't know how to change them. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
