How to get my phone to recognize my voicemail number

Solution
A voicemail number is usually built into the phone. Unless you are using a service not provided by your carrier/service provider. You should only have to hit voicemail on the screen (if there is an icon) or press and hold 1 when on the dial pad.

If you are trying to use an external number that would be a little different. Which are you trying to do?

Add your voicemail number to your contacts, name the person Voicemail, choose "Mobile Number", and set a custom Ringtone if you wish.

Now when the number calls you with a message your phone will ring using the custom Ringtone.

If you have an earlier version of Android than Oreo you should be able to set a custom SMS Notification tone as well.

This feature has been removed in some phones using Oreo and you'll need a 3rd party Messaging APP to set individual Notification tones based on whom (or what) is SMSing you.
