Users of Android Lollipop may remember that we had the ability to access the camera and phone directly from the lock screen. Once updated to Marshmallow, the dialer disappeared only to be replaced by voice search. I rarely use voice search, so wanted to return the dialer to its rightful place. If you want to do the same, here’s how to get the lock screen dialer back on Android Marshmallow.
Return the lock screen dialer in Android Marshmallow.
1. Navigate to Settings and then Apps.
2. Tap the gear icon in the top right of the screen.
3. Select Default apps then Assist & voice input.
4. Tap Assist app and select ‘None’ from the menu when it appears.
Changing from Google Now removes voice search and enables the lock screen dialer once more. Now, you just need to swipe from the bottom left of your lock screen to access the dialer.
Return to Google Now
Many people now prefer voice control of their phone, so if you have tried reactivating the dialer and don’t like it, you can return it to defaults by following the same process but select ‘Google Now’ instead of ‘None’.
1. Navigate to Settings and Apps.
2. Tap the gear icon in the top right of the screen.
3. Select Default apps then Assist & voice input.
4. Tap Assist app and select ‘Google Now’ from the menu when it appears.
The swipe action is the same for either app. Just swipe from the bottom left of the lock screen and you will now access voice control instead of the dialer.
