Put the CD in and boot it up?

You should check to see if you can even get drivers for that laptop first. I doubt there are any Windows 7 drivers for that thing as it is pretty old, but I would look first.

Too bad he doesn't have a spare drive laying around he could install it and test it with win 7 .. Have you tried Linux such as umbunto or zorin to get the most out of your older hardware?

Yep that's dell for ya years ago I had a 600 MHZ lappy from them wanted to upgrade from win 98 to win Me Pos if you ask me and called them up no support so you get stuck in that mode with a lot of the big name companys sad isn't it.
