How to play a file while it's being converted?

I'm currently converting a series of files to use on my phone and I'd like to know if there is a player that can play the file while it's still being converted so I can test it beforehand.

VLC player may do it, but it's likely to interrupt the conversion. And the file will not likely be a full file before it's completed to even play.

I think if you use handbrake it offers an option to do a sample conversion so you can do a small file to test, it lets you set the amount of time to convert.
