How to Prevent Stuck ‘Butterfly’ Keys Due to Dust Accumulation on the MacBook Pro

The latest MacBooks have been launched with a keyboard update, featuring the ‘butterfly keys’ which are super thin and gives the user an almost touchscreen feel. However, with the good there is always the bad. A lot of users have raised complaints regarding the butterfly keys with the primary concern being that even the lightest dust accumulation can stop these keys from working.
Since many of us use our laptops on the go or maybe at a café, the occurrence of stuck butterfly keys is becoming quite common. If your MacBook is still under insurance, we strongly suggest that you take it to a service center. But if it isn’t and you are going to have to pay a huge repair bill which you would rather avoid, here are steps to prevent stuck butterfly keys due to dust accumulation.

Step 1
Gently remove the stuck key with a piece of plastic. You can either use a guitar pick or a business card, basically anything thin enough to get under the butterfly keys and not strong enough to cause damage. You need to push the key gently upwards on both sides using the object of your choice and you should hear a small click once it is unhinged.

Step 2
Now that the key is off you can see the butterfly mechanism which is basically a double lock instead of a central one. You can use the same object or a tissue paper (do not wet it) to scrape off whatever dust has accumulated on the mechanism. Make sure to clean the corners well.

Step 3
Put the key back into place and give it a light push on both sides and you should hear the small click sound again. This should sufficiently ensure the reworking of your stuck butterfly key.
