How To Prevent Stuttering In VR Games

One of the worst things you can experience in VR is stuttering because it makes you feel dizzy or you may get motion sickness. You need to prevent this from happening in order to feel comfortable in VR games. This guide will help you solve some of those problems.

We will achieve this by disabling unnecessary background programs and adjust some settings.
Try to do the following:

Step 1. Adjust some settings in SteamVR

  • ■ Reprojection should be disabled
    ■ Bluetooth and Camera also disabled
    ■ Disable Performance Heuristics
    ■ Find the process “vivelink.exe” and stop (kill) it
Step 2. Close (disable) some external programs

  • ■ If you have F.lux, disable it
    ■ Close all of the unnecessary background programs
    ■ Chrome is a huge RAM and performance cutter, so close it and all its background processes
Step 3. Adjust game settings

  • ■ In your Steam game list, alt-double-click a game to show the settings window. Here disable or lower the resolution of the external (spectator) monitor
    ■ Lower the in-game graphics of the game
    ■ Try minimizing the spectator window
    ■ Overlapping any program on the spectator window decreases performance, so try to avoid that as much as possible
    ■ You can increase the game process priority to make Windows giving it priority from the resources, thus avoid stuttering
Step 4. Adjust System settings

  • ■ If you have overclocks on your hardware, revert it to stock speed
    ■ Update your BIOS
    ■ If you haven’t upgraded to Windows 10, do that
    ■ Adjust the Power Management settings to High Performance
Step 5. Adjust Driver settings

  • ■ Try to roll back to another (earlier) version of NVidia graphics driver that still supports Direct Mode
    ■ Adjust the performance setting to High Performance in NVidia Control Panel
Shadowplay should be disabled from NVidia GeForce Experience
    ■ NVidia Services that should be disabled: Streamer Service, Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service, Streamer Network Service
