So I was restarting my laptop the other day and after restarting it showed me a black screen saying I had no operating system. I tried restarting again after that and now it doesn't turn on anymore. The screen stays black and only the Caps Lock LED blinks. According to HP's diagnostic lights table my laptop's BIOS corrupted (Caps Lock blinks twice per cycle).

My laptop is an HP d053cl and has an EFI partition which presumably contains a copy of the BIOS. I tried holding Win + B while powering on the laptop, which is supposed to recover the BIOS from the EFI partition, but that didn't work. I also tried recovering the BIOS with a flash drive. I tried both of the BIOS recovery files on HP's website, but neither worked. When I loaded the F1A.1 version (I think that's the version number) of the BIOS on my flash drive, my laptop booted to it and started the BIOS recovery process, but quit because it "couldn't open the BIOS signature file." When I loaded the other version of the BIOS on my flash drive, my laptop wouldn't even boot to it.

How can I recover my BIOS?

Hi ppiedmont,

It might be possible that there is a hardware problem that prevents you to enter in BIOS setting. I would suggest you to update your BIOS setting, follow below methods to update it:

When you turn on computer, a message should be displayed specifying certain key to press to start setup. F2 button is used in most of the computer systems, press the button when prompted.

Or, try holding F2 button for half second while starting the computer, once you enter in setup mode; just follow the instruction mentioned in displayed screen to reset the BIOS to defaults.

Hi,

Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help before you reseat the CMOS battery.
- Start by doing a hard reboot, remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds then try booting it up again.
- If it doesn't work proceed with reseating the RAM's, remove them all for couple of seconds then put them back in making sure everything is seated properly.
- If you'll see lights on the laptop and you can hear the fans spinning, connect an external monitor and see if you'll get any display from it because if you do that means the problem is the built in display.
- You may need to check the ribbon that connects the LCD to the motherboard.
- If all these will not work the problem proceed with removing the CMOS battery for a second then put it back in.

Here's a video tutorial on how to disassemble the laptop, you'll see the CMOS battery on the motherboard itself and it's like a small coin like battery.
