How to Replace the Kickstand on a Microsoft Surface Pro

One of the biggest issues with the Microsoft Surface Pro is that the kickstand is rather flimsy and can easily break off. Worse, Microsoft doesn’t offer an easy way to simply buy a replacement kickstand unit. However, if you want to remove the broken kickstand to make way for a third party replacement or simply just want to get it off of your tablet, take the following steps to do so.

Step 1: You will need a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the kickstand. This type of screwdriver is genuinely considered to be a “specialty” tool and is not included in most toolbox sets. However, these types of screwdrivers generally come in handy for taking apart electronics, so it might be worthwhile for you to invest in one.

Step 2: If you do choose to purchase a T5 Torx screwdriver, proceed by laying your Surface facedown, pulling up the kickstand, and unscrewing the small screws that hold it in place on both the right- and left-hand sides of the device. Once you have unscrewed the kickstand, pull it gently away from your tablet.

Step 3: If you do manage to find a replacement kickstand—search Google for third-party options, or look on eBay to see if anyone is selling aftermarket Surface parts—then you can easily attach it to your tablet in the same way that you just removed the original.

Recap

The Surface Pro is a great piece of hardware, but unfortunately, the plastic kickstand can’t hold up to even the smallest levels of abuse. Luckily, the kickstand is easy to remove from the tablet and, if you can find a replacement, equally easy to reinstall.
