How to type text with remote

Just brought new tcl smart to and trying to set up Internet. It says put in wifi password but can't get remote to type in txt or numbers.

Am very surprised a video keypad didn't pop up, then you just go left-right-up-down-select. Afraid you may have to actually read the manual {gasp!}
