Question HP 15 Pavilion Notebook - Power Issues

I have this Pavilion 15 - when I connect the external power supply to the jack socket on my machine, nothing happens no lights nothing. I have tested the Power Supply on another machine - it works perfectly. I have replaced the jack socket on the computer , the problem is still there but now it is intermittent failure.
Any ideas please - it has been suggested that there is a System board fault, but the computer works when running on battery - I just can't recharge it !

Plug in the connector and press sideways on the edge of the connector in various directions and see if the LED by the connector comes on. Press firmly but not hard and hold each press for several seconds. If you have an intermittent, that may reveal it. A further test would be to use a voltmeter and trace connections inside the machine. Be sure to use ESD precautions if you take the laptop apart.

Sorry for delay in responding - only just seen your reply !!!!!.
don't know how or why but the problem has resolved itself - computer running continuously for the past week.
