HP dv5 Wont Start / Black Screen

After putting my laptop to sleep I could not get it to wake, tried powering off/on but now all I get is a black screen.

Symptoms

• 
  - Caps Lock blinking continually (blue)
  - Wireless light on (orange)
  - 2 lights on edge of left side always on (one blue - one orange)
  - When powering on you can hear fan starting and disk? unlocking noise but fan promptly stops

Try removing the battery for a few minutes. In fact, see if it will power up w/o the battery. I don't know if it needs the battery in place or not. Can't remember.

Battery is out, im running with power cable and no difference!

What happens when you try to boot to a DVD, same thing?
Which dv5 model is it, exactly? It may have a CMOS reset you can use to clear the BIOS to default.

unfortunately I cannot boot to a DVD. Model is dv5-2035dx

You may be able to return the BIOS to its default state by removing the RTC battery. See page 62 of your manual for instructions. It may take awhile for the charge to drain. On a desktop it is only a few seconds, but on a laptop it could be many minutes. There may also be a CLR RTC jumper near the battery that will reset the CMOS immediately.

You are speaking alien to me right now as I am not familiar with those terms. Could you explain that in layman's terms?

That's what your owner's manual is for. Page 62 is a good place to start.
The BIOS controls how the laptop operates before it loads the operating system. It may have gotten corrupted somehow and needs to be reset. Sometimes removing the little coin battery inside the case for a few minutes will reset it to default and allow the problem to be corrected. On the otherhand, that may not be the issue and nothing will change. You could have a dead display. But I would first unplug it from the charger, remove the battery and open the case to find the battery.

May be a little late but I had the same issue with my DV5-1110em and it's an issue with the BGA under either CPU, HT chip or GPU. To get it booted temporarily I removed the media bar and the keyboard. With mine there is three screws under the keyboard once removed. I held a hairdryer on the highest heat setting in that area and reboot the laptop until it actually boots. This only lasts a minute or so, but it's an easy way of checking for a BGA issue. I did a full board rework on mine approx. 24 hours ago and so far so good but these things have terrible cooling so the issue will likely return within a week
