hp laptop screen goes black but curser still works

My HP laptop is about a yr and a half old and about 6 months ago the screen would randomly go dark but the mouse continues to work. It lasts a few seconds and then the screen comes back. It only happens once in a while. Anyone know what might be causing this? I am running Windows 10 and everything is up to date.

It sounds like a graphics card driver issue or a gpu going bad. I would uninstall the gpu drivers, restart, and then load the new drivers back on. I'd also check the event viewer around the time of the blackouts to see if there were any error codes or anything.

Did it start doing this after updating or being damaged?

I don't know what or where the 'event viewer' is. I can only do the basics on my own lol. I think I can figure out how to uninstall the driver though...I think. I don't recall this starting after an update, it has just been very random. I'm assuming by damage you mean the laptop being dropped or something of the sort, if so then no, none of that. It sits on my laptop stand in front of my couch and never moves.
