HP Pavilion G7 Problems

I had an update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 on my HP Pavilion G7. I let it update and when it was finished, it restarted and it turned back on and said it was applying update. I then got in the shower for like 10 minutes. When I came back down, it was turned off. (My computer screen is broke so I have it plugged into a ViewSonic vg2230 using a d-sub connector.) when I turned it on, the computer fans turned on and the cracked screen lit up. But, there was no response from the monitor. It was just black and the light was orange by the power. I've looked up many ways to fix this but no answers. Can anyone please help me?!

Hi, when you boot from Windows close the lid and it will go to the external monitor as the default.
