Hi all,

I need a speedy little machine for Uni work. Ideally with an SSD and capable of running SolidWorks. I was thinking either of this refurb HP Probook: https://www.mycheaplaptop.co.uk/laptops-under-%C2%A3300/hp-430-g2

OR

This refurb Inspiron 13 2-in-1: http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdfh1&l=en&s=dfh&sign=PXhcOSHtr1T4IOw%2fPR7UdamliTkMms7BeALO%2bQN2xSyfzVfmEMeR8LRHS5SwWYbamRfZZLmB9qwIBz%2bSfAfgJNXlD4SDvn38UDrOhpJeGwvJRl2hoWsr1gvK6Z0KVWileOHmSZGbXBLeqErj5grN0yRJVFpczciL1%2fdnENwTnq25MVocwct3fcINpNY5icZqvB28E3cBdptvRPKJTndtq98eQeE4UWo%2bOremCFEa3oprseVuocZbVNUoHdjZ%2fB7fFhQGCV1lxqA%3d

My budget is about 300 pounds. I was going to go with the probook but the screen res is only 720p and that's kind of a pain.
I was considering the Inspiron but at only 4gb of ram I'd have to shell out another 40 pounds for an upgrade.

Can anyone give me any advice on this?

Thanks for your time.

I agree that 4GBs is the major stumbling block, so I did some digging and found this alternative on eBay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T530-15-6-Laptop-Core-i7-3740QM-2-70GHz-256-SSD-8GB-RAM-10184/401489445666?epid=140656747&hash=item5d7aa2c322:g:7nYAAOSwExlaeiK6

You get a quad-core 3rd-gen i7 CPU, a 256GB SSD and 8GBs of RAM. The display is a WXGA 1080p panel.

This is a US seller that will ship to UK for a total price of $437 ($375 + $62). Going by the latest exchange rate, that should come out as £316. It's slightly over budget, but if you can find an extra 16 quid, I'd say it's worth going for. This T530 seems in pretty good condition and I wouldn't hesitate buying such a laptop on eBay myself. OK, it's refurbished...

OK, it's refurbished, and a bit old, and it is running Windows 7, but with the quad-core CPU and the SSD it will see you through college comfortably.

Cheers,
