I connect my my speakers with 3.5mms connection to the tv but it still there is no sound coming out of the speakers

There is no sound coming out of my speakers with the 3mm connection after I connect to my monitor

your tv has an audio out through headphone? is there a setting in the tv menu that would affect this? what tv is it? HD or boobtube?
