I got a top-loader! Whoohoo!

Yeah, I've been without an NES for about... I guess three years
now. It's been pretty rough, but I've had my reasons for not
replacing my dead toasters. Anyway, I finally decided enough
was enough, I gave up on finding a good deal and plunked down
a large bid on eBay. Yep, I got a toploader too. It might not
be as thrilling as finding one in the wild, but since I'm primarily
an NES collector, and I have several hundred NES games, I started
to feel like a fraud not actually having a system.

It took a little cleaning before it was pleasing to the eye, but
once I scrubbed it down, it was looking pretty nice. I also had
to go get some new games to test it with, so I stopped by the local-ish
GameCrazy and found these:

Pac-Mania (yep!)
Kid Niki
Gyruss
Silk Worm

Yeah, I missed having an NES, big time.

Funny you should say, I'm thinking of getting rid of my NES and Master
System collections so I can concentrate more on the systems I actually play
once in a while, the snes, the megadrive and the saturn.

I was talking with some co-workers about my massive collection,
referring to the bulk of it as the "antiques." For the sake of
description, I call anything pre-x-box/ps/2 antique, save the original
psx. Seeing this brings back memories from the 90's in this forum about
what is classic, and how that has evolved along with the current-gen's
progress line.

The recent reference to Cyberyogi combined with this makes me beg the
question as to how today's regulars regard the concept of "classic" for
the namesake of this forum?

The general definition for most people seems to be "the system I had (or
wanted) as a kid" which obviously means if you're young enough you might
regard the PS as classic. I tend to categorise anything that's 16 bit as a
bit classic, anything that's 8 bit as fairly classic, and anything before
1982 as properly classic.

Arbitrary? Yes.

Hey, if you do decide to sell, I might make you an offer.

I categorize all the game systems that are at least two generations
prior to the current one as classic. Even the ugly, unpopular
disasters.

I know I passed the 300 mark a while back, but I
really have no idea how close I am to 400... so,
somewhere in there.

And what might those reasons be (assuming you could pick one up cheap
enough)?

I'll bet. Gamecrazy will be phasing out the NES and other cartridges
soon... do what I did and build your collection now while it's easy.

Well, for one thing, my games are all in storage, so there didn't seem
to be much of a need to buy a system when I couldn't access my games.
Second, I wanted a toploader for reliability, but money was tight until
recently. I'd have picked one up at a thrift if I could have found one,
but I never did.

Final bid was $78.77. It galls me to think that I passed by brand-new
ones 10 years ago. "Yeah, they look cool" I thought, "but why spend
the money when I already have a perfectly functional NES?" That's a
big D'OH in hindsight.

I rarely use it to begin with, so that's not a big deal. You can use
it, but you need the adaptor.... which I have my eyes peeled for.

I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but I'm finding it harder to go in
there and see things I don't already have. In any case, the best time
to build a collection was about 5 years ago, when Funcoland had nearly
everything under $5... order in bulk and save a fortune. The times,
they are a-changing. Of course, back then Atari 2600 collectors were
saying the same thing. Verbatim.

I still maintain the strict definition of classic: The Atari 2600,
Intellivision, Coleco, and others of its generation. The NES is the
bridge between the classic and modern eras, with qualities that can place
it in both depending on the context.

Of course, I strongly believe that the scope of rgvc extends beyond just
the purely classic.
