I have a brand new onkyo home theater system and I can't get the center speaker and the sub or the 2 surround sound speak to work

Do you have the options set to 5.1 surround? Did you check with Onkyo support? New device, first thing is to go over the manual and contact support if there are issues.

Have you executed initial setup? Did all the speaker work?
If your source signal is stereo only - change sound modes to "All Ch Stereo"
