I have an E-30 Olympus. the camera shut down this morning, moments before sunrise, with a wailing akin to an electronic siren.

Sounds like a total system freeze. Only thing you can do is remove the battery (or let it completely drain if you can't remove it) and wait a minute before putting it back in. If it works again, you're lucky, if it doesn't, that camera is going to need to be repaired or replaced (usually cheaper to just replace)
