I have turned on my Asus x553s and got to the stage where cortana introduces herself but cannot seem to go any further, help

I started up the notebook fine, it reset itself then on the next start up explained an update was required once I could connect to Wi-Fi, I have now reached cortaba but cannot seem to get any further

It's a new system? Did you contact ASUS support? What exactly happens when you do a selection to use or not use Cortana?
