I just got a new iPhone 4S and it doesn't seem to connect when I plug it in to my laptop. The laptop makes a noise like it recognizes that something connected to the USB port, but the iPhone does not show up in My Computer or iTunes. The iPhone does not seem to register that it's connected either

Try it with another system where you know an iPhone worked on. If that also does not see the phone properly, contact where you got it from as you will likely need to exchange it.
