I purchased a Motorola from a friend and he forgot the password and I did to many pattern attempts and now it says it can be unlocked with a gmail account that he doesn't know, how can I take the password off the phone for my use?

Since you have no need for the data on the phone, perform a factory reset.
Your story sounds dubious at best, however all phones can be tracked by their original owners via the hardware ID or MAC address...
Google will provide you the answers if you only search for the model number and "factory reset"

We cannot assist in bypassing any type of security measure. We have no way of knowing if you are telling the truth.

Solution
bignastyid says it all - thread closing now. Basically, your friend either has a very bad memory or it wasn't his phone in the first place.
