Solved! I took many pics in USA saved in my gallery and when I returned to India all of them got deleted. motorola x2

I'm sure they would have made it through Customs so the location is not the prime suspect. Did someone else have access to the phone who might have been a bit jealous?

Use your Android file manager to find the folder DCIM and see if they're hiding in that folder.
