I want to connect my laptop to a monitor but keep volume on the laptop

I connected my laptop to a monitor with a HDMI cord, but the monitor has no speakers. How do I keep the video feed on the monitor but leave volume on the laptop?

Uhhh... Go to the sound control panel and tell it to...

Actually this should had been automatic, HDMI should had detected no speaker on this device and don't change. What does it show you, the sound control panel?

Have u actually done this? asking us a theoretical question?

Change the default playback device from hdmi to onboard in control panel sounds.
