We have recently received this machine donated for charitable
purposes.

Replaced hard drive with a 12GB IBM Travelstar and replaced BIOS
battery.

Tried to boot from the original DVD drive to load operating system
onto hard drive - failed. Booted to DOS from the attached diskette
drive. Can read hard drive without any problem; switch to DVD drive
and receive the error CDR101: Not ready reading drive E:

Updated BIOS, replaced DVD drive with another CDROM drive, all without
success.

Any suggestions?

That always happens. You need a CD-ROM driver (or DVD driver) on the boot
floppy. I think you will also get a temporary RAM drive, hence the CD being
pushed down to E, and this dissapears once you have installed Windows.

Press and hold the F1 key down while turning on the unit. Release after the
MEMCOUNT completes and you hear the POST beep.

This will take you into EZSetup. Set the CD as your first BOOT device, save
your settings and restart the machine with your OS CD in the drive. If the
CD is bootable it will start and install the OS.

If the CD isn't bootable, then you'll need to use a BOOT floppy with CD
support. Make one on any handy machine running W98.
