I'm new to home audio and would greatly appreciate any help on how to connect my phone 3.5mm aux to my surround sound receiver

honestly unless you tell us what equipment you have... cant really give you a clear answer.

If your receiver has any analog inputs then it should work. You may have to set up the input menu of the receiver to associate the connection on the rear with the input source button that you want to use.
