What does Intel and amd use to lock and unlock there cpus im not wanting to do anything just carious cause i read that you can pay Intel 50$ to unlock your cpu so i was wondering do they mod the cpu or us software to do it?

Solution
I don't believe they can.

The K series of intel cpu's come unlocked. I'm pretty sure you can unlock all intel CPU's through bios settings anyway.

As for AMD the black edition CPU's are unlocked. All of the FX series are unlocked and some older phenoms and athlons.

i know those are unlocked but i was wondering what they do to lock or unlock them but i have the new 4670k 1150 cpu and msi z87-g45 gaming

Ah. Well I'm unsure as to how they actually do it. I expect it's possible through both hardware and software. You can change the chip itself to respond to voltage/clock speed changes better I assume. And you can change speeds in the BIOS even on locked chips (unsure how to do so), which may be classed as software.

Where did you read that you can pay intel to unlock a chip?

i no on locked ones u can change voltage and base clock but thats about it and ks everything is unlocked i wish someone could tell us how they do it cause then id buy cheaper cpus lol
