I never really understood why in America higher end smartphones nearly always seem to come with these expensive subsidized contracts forcing you to use a certain carrier.

In Europe, you can always just pay the full price and get the carrier you choose, and more importantly the data plan you choose.

Here in The Netherlands you can buy many phones in contract without SIM lock. I just bought HTC Desire this way. You are in the contract anyway so you will pay.If you use another SIM in it that`s your business. That makes roaming also very easy. But since Apple want a cut from your talk and data spending too from your provider they have to tie you to your provider. That`s just good old greedy Steve.

It just mean it will take longer to hack. If there is a want to hack something, talented programmers will hack it. This is the case with the iPhone. The PS3 only has piracy intended with hacking the console. It's not as interesting, and not worth the time.

I think the main thing we should be asking is, why?

why would i want to unlock something i would never buy and spontaneously hurl at a brick wall if given one out of reflex.

...then it gets rather technical. The baseband is segregated from the main applications processor and communicates with it over i2s, spi, and uart lines. The main processor controls it with (primarily) AT commands over some other transport protocol over the SPI and UART. When you're in a call, the BBP communicates directly with the audio codec over i2s so even if the main OS is freezing up, the call will still go on uninterrupted.

The other advantage is security since if someone cracks iOS, the BBP is still separate. The two don't share any memory, so that's a security advantage.

What, PS3 is totally hackable, in fact i have a few friends who have done it. As stated above, nothing is unhackable. Don't be fooled when people say "oh get a mac you won't have virus or security problems" why then snow leopard? its leopard with all the security updates, same with windows 7. The only reason people think PS3 isn't hacked is the same reason mac wasn't for years, its wasn't in every home, now it is, so its hacked. By the way, if you are running old leopard and haven't updated make sure you do. its not hard to turn on another mac's camera and see what you are doing. Oh and i have macs and pcs they all have their issues and amazingly hackable, sam with my phones, yes you can even hack a black berry.

They really need to force Apple to sell unlocked phones from the start. There is NO reason why one wireless company should be able to 'monopolize' a phone only for their network, and it might actually be illegal to do that, by STRICT interpretation of those American anti-trust laws.

I don't see a problem with the USA's crappiest phone being tied to AT&T. It seems fitting to me. If other carrier's like Sprint and Verizon supported simultaneous voice and data like AT&T does I might consider switching. Seriously though, who in their right mind would want to have to hang up on their buddy or significant other just to check movie times or the score for the big game? That's just rude.
