Do they plan on giving the $5 back to iPod Touch owners who updated earlier? You know, the $5 they shouldn't have had to spend to begin with.

[citation][nom]KawiNinjaZX[/nom]Cheap bastards, it's $5, you don't have to buy it, and Apple is a business out to make money.[/citation]

yeah by bleeding every little cent from thier customers. Apple is worse than Microsoft. Everybody bashes Microsoft, but Apple is 10 times worse. And Apple has very monopolistic practices. And yes I would pretty much have to buy it. I cant get any bug fixes without it.

I can care fricken less if they need to make money. This update is not worth 5 bucks period. It should be free to 3.0 users.

I just updated my iPhone OS to 3.1, not 3.1.1. Also, if you already have OS 3.0 on your Touch, it's free to update to 3.1. If you have anything below 3.0, 5 bucks to upgrade. The dozens and dozens of Zune fans or competing MP3 players don't have to pay for updates because in general, places where people buy music for those tend to have suscriptions to Rhapsody or the Zune Marketplace. Yes I know Amazon doesn't offer suscriptions, but they also don't sell MP3 players under their name. Regardless, if you don't want to pay anything, don't buy the hardware. There are plenty of others who will buy an iPod this Christmas season. Yes that's right, I said Christmas. None of that political correctness crap by calling it holiday season.

Free for 3.1 or 3.1.1?

Ya, my dumbass paid the $9.95 lastmonth for 3.0. This month 3.1.1 (which includes the 3.0 of course) was only $4.95... but like ghostface147 said, it was free for 3.# upgraders. Giving my wife the 3.1.1 iTax er iTouch.

Yes. ZuneHD is in my pocket as of launch. Did my $25 down at BB.
$14.95 per month for all the songs I can digest from MS. And that's a LOT. I just wish the ZuneHD had the 120GB my current Zune has.

AndrewMD's point of having MS charge for updates is not a bad idea. If they follow apples model and release an o/s for much cheaper.. then paying for a few updates wouldn't hurt. Either that or you could all bitch and have apple charge more for an o/s with free updates. In either case: you are paying for it. Apples option just makes it optional. As for everyone complaining about $5: the time you spent reading this article and complaining is worth more. Also you don't HAVE to buy it.

[citation][nom]505090[/nom]Seriously they are going to charge for an update.[/citation]

It is free for iPhone users and has always been $10 for iTouch users when going from a 1.0 to 2.0 or 2.0 to 3.0 OS. If you upgraded your iTouch to 3.0 already, it is free for you too. What is so wrong about that. If you don't want to pay then don't upgrade.

First off, I'm amazed that Apple is charging people money for software updates. However, I'm even more amazed that there are people on this forum defending it. The argument that Apple charges less for the OS initially is ridiculous. They only do that because they charge 400% extra for the hardware! Honestly though, I'm surprised I haven't seen any morons say "lolz, well M$ charges 4 Windoze 7 which is just Vista SP3!"

Apple is not charging for an incremental update. A lot of people are confused about this. If you are still using firmware version 2.0 then Apple is charging $5 for you to update from 2.0 to 3.1. Those of you who already purchased 3.0 from Apple will get this 3.1 update for free obviously. Apple only charges for integer whole number updates as in 2.2.1 -> 3.0. 3.0 -> 3.1 is free.

I still think it's a sham to charge for 2.0 -> 3.0 though.

Charging $ for software updates? All the apple lemmings really are going to be paying out the nose for all the functionality updates in the future. "New in Iphone OS 6, Calls are clearer than ever, but it will cost you $20 for the update."

VioMeTriX - It is really shameful of you to act the way you are acting on this forum.

I find that Apple is allowed to do so much more to its users than Microsoft does to its users.

All systems will need patching some way or the other. No software will ever be released perfect, it is not cost effective to do so. If every bug was to be fix before releasing a software title, the software may never hit the store. (I am speaking mostly for OS systems but games and other software can fall under this too)

I actually own both an Apple computer and a PC. My Apple updates just as often as my Windows PC does on a daily basis. While Apple has not charged for updates provided over the internet for my Apple OS, they do charge for what I call incremental updates like 10.1,10.2,10.3...10.6. Apple releases an OS version almost every year at the cost of 100.00 - 200.00 a pop.

The point of my post was to highlight that Apple is allowed to get away with charging for an update on a device it controls 100% and it is completely unacceptable for Apple to be allowed to this.

As for you being unemployeed, I believe everyone could be in agreement that your predictement is an unfortuate one. We all do not want to be in that situation, but I can tell you I am not floating in the sky in a glass bottom ship.

everybody says that apples o/s is cheaper so paying for the updates arent so bad... well windows may be more expensive but it runs on any pc at all.... with anything made by apple you have to run it on their super expensive, way underpowered crap hardware... so yes their o/s is cheaper, they already raped you 10x over on their hardware

[citation][nom]wongster[/nom]good attitude. i am befuddled as to why you currently find yourself unemployed on a day like this[/citation]

ummm we are in a recession....and if you meant that as sarcasm due to my ranting here.... it is only on these forums...if you knew me in real life you wouldnt believe me capable of going off on people the way i do
