I have an iPhone 7 Plus. My 2-year contract is up next month. I love the 2 lens camera. What do you recommend for my next phone? The XR, or the now old X or just keep the 7 Plus?

I don't know if anyone can call $749 affordable.

The original iphone was $599 and most capable smartphones these days are under $500.

As a reply to the article question
"What Should You Buy?"

None of them.
Buy an Android. For the money of the cheapast iPhone mentioned you can get 2pcs of Nokia 7.1 and still have 50$ left.

By the way: I have used Apple at work for 10-12years (paid by my contractor, aka forced) and have used Windows phone and Android private for about the same time span. In my mind, knowing all OS'es and after trying most brands (Nokia, Samsung, Lg, OnePlus, Apple and more) i would today allways chooose Android. Its just so much better, but still leaves me with a huge variety of distributors (=designs and features).
Im the type of guy who do not want to be locked into a "prison" by the manufacturer and the biggest gripes with apple is
1) imprisonment by OS
2) lack of inovation (constant followers of android)
2) BUT STILL insanely high price... due to monopoly and commercials (fans) and the hype that they managed to dunk into fanboys.

If Apple made the better phone i would buy it in a heartbeat, but now they make worse phones for more money. Its like...fool you TWICE in tje same sentence :)
