Is a grounding strap necessary to replace a DLP chip

Solution
If you have problems with static electricity build up. You should use a grounding strap when touching any circuit board. I've never used one myself as it isn't a problem where I live. I also touch something metal first just in case there is a build up.

ESD (Electro Static Discharge) is largely over-exagerated but you should still take at least minimal precautions.

If you are in a room without carpet, not wearing wool socks then you have very very little chance.
Touching metal before working should clear any residial energy. If you have access to a strap then might as well use it though.
