Why have to decide? Get both. That way you can have power and portability. The desktop will last a lot longer because of it's upgradability. I have desktop that are going on 10 years old and still going strong. (thanks to using Linux). I have to replace my laptop every couple of years even though it also runs Linux. Plus there is the storage question. Ever priced a 10 Tb SSD? I can replace my laptop for less than that!The 12 Tb HDD in my desktop was only $150.
Of course none of this applies if you're a gamer. Then it doesn't matter what you have. Just expect to replace your system every year.
