Is this a solid laptop?

Not a fan of convertibles myself, IMO, not best at either category, then at 15" I hope you planing to keep it in the dorm and not lugging around that brick.

Depending on the course work most of it would be done online, so it would stay mostly in one place, and notes would be done in class mostly on paper (hard to do engineering math on a lappy)

It's really cheap, and my dad has one. It's very smooth running, and is only 2 pounds. It's a "chromebook killer". It comes with the OS. The display is great too.

Its essentially going to replace my desktop other than running heavy games (The second had a discreet graphics).

Why don't you just keep your desktop at your dormitory or whatever and bring that ASUS laptop to school?
