City considers personal electronic device ban on its property
By Jonathan Gneiser
Marshfield News-Herald
Private cell phones and personal digital assistants soon could be
banned from city-owned public premises in Marshfield.
The Information Technology Department recommends a ban on privately
owned personal electronic devices by anyone on city premises, including
city employees, elected officials and visitors.
The Finance, Budget and Personnel Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. in
City Hall Plaza to consider it.
"With the advancement of technology as it has been at this point, we
feel we need to implement a policy in order to protect the assets of
the city of Marshfield," IT department head Dan Wolfgram said. "It's
just become too great of a security risk for the city."
Update: The city council rejected this proposal in a meeting later in
the week, but I thought it still merited discussion here. It's not
entirely off topic because the ban would have included laptops.
