Isnt it possible to add 1gb and 512mb of ram in a laptop

ive never seen a laptop that doesnt support mis-matched pairs. should work fine.
if it didnt work there wouldnt be laptops with 3GB of ram.

Sure it is. My IBM ThinkPad T40 had 512MB (2 x 256MB) of RAM. I replaced one 256MB stick with a 1GB stick years later to improve performance.
