Japanese SNES recommendations?

I'm enjoying SNES emulation on the Xbox oh so much. Any
recommendations for obscure, quirky Japanese SNES games? Language
is not a concern, though I'm not fond of RPGs even in my native
English.

And what's the story behind all those pornorific
anime/manga/mag-scan slideshow roms on SNES? Were these actually
released on cartridge format for sale under the counter?

Mario Picross and the other eight Picross games will eat your brain for
a couple of weeks.

I'd pick Umihara Kawase as one of the neatest Japan-only games. Its a
platformer that feels very different from any other game I've ever
played. Bionic Commando is perhaps the closest comparison, but Umihara
Kawase is still very different even from that game.

Return Of Double Dragon is also worth playing. Yes, we got Super Double
Dragon on this side of the pond, but the Japanese version of DD4 has
numerous bugfixes. The final level is also very different, as Super
Double Dragon had a rush-job final level so it could ship quickly. DD4
was actually released LATER in Japan than in North America, and it really
shows.

Most (all?) of those pr0n slideshow roms are homebrews.

Man, this one is so good. Thanks for the tip.

Homebrews developed when? During the lifetime of the SNES itself?
If so, in what format were they distributed? And if developed
afterwards to be enjoyed on emulators, why bother with such
nonsense when real porn is just an internet click away?

Most of them, yes. They were usually distributed as ROMs, albiet for
use on the floppy-based console copiers of the day. (A disk drive
that interfaced with the SNES and PC that allows you to dump
cartridges and copy games to disk for playback on the SNES)

-Super Momotaro Denetsu 2 (good board game, part of a whole series of
platformers/RPGs/etc by Hudson Soft)
-Gundam Wing: Endless Duel (seems to be popular with GW fanboys, decent
robot fighting game ala SF2)
-Dragon Ball Z: Super Butoden series (another SF2 ripoff; there's three of
em, one for every saga. The first one is an unresponsive turd and the third
has no story mode, so numero 2 is your best bet)
There's also a platformer involving umbrellas and birds (I think umbrella is
in the actual name). It's a decent game so pick it up if you happen to find
it.
